The historic building's architecture is fine and full of character.
The carpets in the hallways were heavily stained, contributing to an overall feeling of neglect.

Free wifi
This is a really tired hotel, the la k of a working elevator is the first clue to this and they need to spend the money they are saving on fixing that to renovate the rooms. Our room was very small, with two smaller comfortable beds with no headboard! The bathroom was so small your legs were wedged between the sink and toilet! If you are a light sleeper then avoid the rooms to the front as it is so noisy at night from the street that it took me hours to get to sleep. The complimentary ear plugs didn't help, and have you ever stayed at a hotel that had complimentary ear plugs!!! Breakfast was very poor. This wasn't a budget priced hotel so I'd recommend giving you money to be of the other hotels in Monterey.

great for weekend strolls near eateries and attractions
I loved being just a few steps away from Selfieville and the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail. The choice of restaurants nearby, like Rosine's and Plumes Coffee House, really added to the convenience of dining choices . As a solo traveler, the comfortable room was a nice bonus after a long day of walking and discovering the city, but I did notice that the carpets in the hallways could use a little attention.
